| tenstick se ne andato e ci ha lasciati con un intervista al chitarrista dei Tomahawk, ex Jesus Lizard, Duane Denison.
TS: What do you do when you're not involved in Tomahawk? DD: When I'm not doing Tomahawk, I do other musical things, like recording with other artists (over the past few years I've recorded with Silver Jews, Bobby Bare Jr, Will Oldham, Andrew Bird, etc) as well as collaborate on new things, like this new project/band with Paul Barker(ex-Ministry). I also have a wife, a child, and a house to look after.
TS: Describe how you approach a Tomahawk album. DD: On Tomahawk albums, I usually write or collect the raw material over a period of time and them make 'home demos' on my workstation which I send out to everyone. I try to maintain some continuity with the material.
TS: Any hints on what the new Tomahawk album will sound like? DD: The new Tomahawk album will be quite different, quite a departure from the first two. That's all I'm saying for now...
TS: Do you still play with Hank Williams III? DD: No, I quit playing with Hank3 back in early '01.
TS: When did you first decide to pick up a guitar? DD: I started playing guitar when I was 12. I took piano lessons before that, and sang in the church choir.
TS: Who was your biggest influence? DD: My single biggest influence was a guitar teacher named Lynn Bender, who showed me how to practice and not just sit around and 'jam out' all the time.
TS: Do you have any gear you're particularly fond of? DD: I have an old Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. It's very primitive, very limited, has a built-in speaker, etc., and serves no purpose, but I'll never sell it.
TS: What's your live gear setup consist of? DD: Currently, I'm using mostly Fernandes guitars, Hiwatt amps, and TC Electronic processors....along with Seymour Duncan pickups, Menatone overdrives, etc.
TS: Do you think you will ever do a solo album? DD: Yeah, I'll do a solo album eventually.....I always need other people to help out, then it turns into a group anyway, so what the hell....
TS: Do you have a home studio? DD: I have a very basic home studio w/a Korg 1600 multi track workstation. I have a pro tools rig at my practice space now which I'm slowly learning how to use also.
TS: Describe your time with the Jesus Lizard (Grunge era). DD: The Jesus Lizard was a great period, about 10 years. We went from nothing to being self-sufficient, all on our music. It was hard at first, but we stuck to it and stuck together and made it happen.
TS: Would you ever consider making another Jesus Lizard record? DD: It would take some serious money to get us to make another J.Liz album! We've all moved on to other things, it just wouldn't be the same. Plus we were younger, crazier, etc., and that affects the music as well.
TS: How many more Tomahawk albums will there be? DD: I know there will be at least one more Tomahawk album, but beyond that I really can't say....you never know, it could end tomorrow or go on forever.....
TS: Is it hard to make good CD's by just trading tapes? DD: I've never made a cd just by trading tapes! There's a misconception out there that somehow Tomahawk make their albums just by sending things back and forth. We send basic demos to each other, but then we get together and record it live in the studio---both our existing albums have happened that way.
TS: What's Mike Patton like in the studio? DD: Pattons' great, very energetic, lotsa ideas, etc.
TS: Of all the bands you've been in..where does Tomahawk rank? DD: Tomahawk probably has the best all-around musicianship of all the groups I've played with.
TS: Just one last thing, what do you think of all the sounds and samples Mike uses for the Tomahawk albums? Have you ever dived into them yourself? DD: Well, obviously I must like Mike's sample choices or I wouldn't keep doing this....but sometimes I might make suggestions, mostly I just let him go, he's pretty good(!)...
That's it, thanks, dpd
