Throbbing Gristle, mi pare doveroso

Mi pare doveroso parlare di uno dei gruppi + importanti degli ultimi 30 anni (no, di piu')..... il loro nome spunta sempre fuori come influenza su altri musicisti e cito Merzbow, perfino i Melvins e tanti altri che non sto a nominare. Hanno inventato la musica industriale nel senso che sono stati i primi a coniare il termine, loro e' il motto 'industrial music for industrial people' cosi' come la loro etichetta si chiamava 'industrial records'. Il loro nuovo disco (siiiiiii, finalmente di nuovo insieme!) esce il 1 aprile 2007 (vero) su Mute records.
Io consiglio tutti i dischi, ma siccome ci sono molte compilation raccomando e dischi fondamentali: heathen earth (is the world as sad as it seems?), funeral in berlin, second annual report, 20 jazz funk greats, d.o.a. the third and final annual report.

Genesis and Cosey had worked with performance art as 'COUM Transmissions' before entering the musical scene in 1976.
As a group, they experimented with music and its methods, just to see what could be done with it, just as with performance art. Provocation and the unexpected was their trademark, and the result was quite enormous.
For their performance (musical and art) at the I.C.A. , the public reaction (or rather the press's reaction) was that of shock. Members of the parliament expressed their outraged views in the press, calling Throbbing Gristle 'sick people', 'wreckers of civilization' and worse. This gave Throbbing Gristle a lot of publicity, and enabled them to get more gigs.
The band used synthesizers, guitars, lots of pedaleffects, bass guitar, tape cut ups, cornet, and presented a very varied, but mostly noisy, soundpicture. They used digital samplers before any Fairlights were built, and Chris built a lot of other electronic equipment to form the very special sound of TG.
Most of the songs were made directly, unrehearsed on stage and was rarely remixed when the records were made. Even the studio material is mostly 'live'.
The music range from ambient synth, to really harsh guitar-bashing, to 'nice' pop tunes, but they all have the pure energy of enthusiasm and experimentation.
The last recordings are dated 1981, and that's when TG ceased to exist as a group.

Genesis has been involved in the group 'Psychic TV' ever since the break-up of TG. He now lives in the U.S.A, since he got exiled from Great Britain.

Chris has made music in his own name, 'Cris Carter', but also together with Cosey as 'Cris & Cosey' and 'CTI'.

Peter was a part of 'Psychic TV' in the beginning, but is now involved in the band 'Coil'.

Cosey has made a few records on her own, as 'Cosey Fanni Tutti', but also together with Chris in 'Chris & Cosey' and 'CTI'.

Mah, non concordo con scaruffi. La sua presentazione e' piena di imprecisioni, non credo li conosca molto bene in realta'. La sua analisi della musica e' secondo me tutta sballata, io direi che l'influenza piu' grande per loro e' William Burroughs che fu tra l'altro un grande amico ed estimatore del gruppo. In the shadow of the sun e' la colonna sonora di un film di Jarman e cosey fanni tutti non faceva la fotomodella ma l'attrice porno e questo aprticolare e' molto importante preche' si collega bene con la ricerca del gruppo. Piu' che alienazione i throbbing gristle giocavano con l'idea dei simboli e la distruzione delle barriere tra 'artista' e 'pubblico', cosey fanni tutti a questo aggiungeva la propria ricerca personale sulla femminilita' e la liberazione del desiderio femminile.
Vabbe' scusate l'ot ma io sono una cultrice del gruppo che ce posso fa'?

Eh con gli Psychic Tv bisogna aprire un altro topic, quanta roba.....gia' solo a parlare della scena rave.......
io me lo sono persi non molto tempo fa, non ci posso credere!
E poi tutta la storia che costrinse orridge a lasciare l'inghilterra fu allucinante, i tabloid montarono un vero e proprio caso di 'pedofilia' contro di lui. Anche in questo senso lui e' stato un precursore, nel senso della facilita' con cui i tabloid hanno preso il posto della legge.
Vabbe', io quando comincio con i Throbbing gristle potrei andare avanti un'eternita'.......... anzi fermatemi va'



Ah! un'ultima cosa fatemela dire: io ho tutto in vinile, molte cose comprate (non da me) quando uscirono all'epoca. anche force the hand of chance ho in vinile. Vabbe' sono una nerd! pero' certe cose che le hai a fare se poi non le dici?

Vabbe' poi Scaruffi non ha nemmeno menzionato la fondamentale influenza di Aleister Crowley sui TG. Ne hanno usato il linguaggio, pensate all'uso che fanno della parola Magick (come la scriveva Crowley), al motto di crowley che hanno adottato come loro (do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law), e poi Genesis P Orridge ne ha adottato la prosa, il riferirsi a se stesso nella terza persona e l'uso dell'inglese arcaico.

ieri ho ascoltato Funk Beyond Jazz.
E' una registrazione live, peccato per le 2-3 tracce in cui cazzeggiano, rovinano un po' l'atmosfera dell'album (ricordo il secondo e il terzo pezzo, Persuasion e Still Waking).

Considerando che sono partito ascoltando un cd live e mi è piuttosto piaciuto credo che gli album in studio saranno anche meglio (a volte la voce del pubblico dava persino fastidio mentre suonavano, cazzo)

edit: ho scoperto che ho un'altra versione del disco... almeno confrontandola con la tracklist di un sito

ma perchè il loro primo album si chiama The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle

è sempre per quel discorso su Crowley? O sul distorcere il tempo e lo spazio? o che?

Mah, non so. Devo chiedere al vero esperto, ma non e' in casa ora.
Comunque second annual report e' uscito solo ora in cd, non era mai stato pubblicato. Bellissima la canzone 'very friendly', vedi se riesci a trovarla. Racconta il primo omicidio della coppia Bradley-Hindley, umorismo nero al massimo. Poi quello scemo di Scaruffi dice che Orridge e' di Londra, ahahahah e' di manchester.

Una possibile risposta laz, ecco un commento che ho trovato:

For years, the first Throbbing Gristle album was 2nd Annual Report, and in hindsight, it would be just like the band to call their first album a "sequel," just to mess with your head. Some didn't buy that, and went looking for The First Annual Report. To their dismay, the suspiciously small number of copies of the album (a hundred or so at most), led people to believe that it never did exist, or that it was an early concert bootleg (It didn't help that the band stayed hush-hush about it). So when it go re-released this past year (I forget if it was remastered - I've lent my copy), what suprised everone was the original release date: 1975! And it's almost all percussive noise blasts (If you catch a synth melody, or Cosey Fanni Tutti's guitar-work, it's a rare treat) and it can really make you feel physically ill. First Annual Report has none of the Neu!-inspired synth melodies of Jazz-Funk Greats. The 18-minute long first track, Very Friendly, is about a sexual encounter/axe murder with Genesis P-Orridge repeating "Ian brady, very friendly" and "There's been a murder" for minutes on end. It'll make you sweat with panic, give you an ulcer, make you short of breath. So not unlike 1975's other mythical noise album, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, First Annual Report is for the boldest fans of the Gristle and/or DHR Records only.


Very friendly infatti e' una narrazione malata che piu' macabra e malata non si puo' del primo omicidio di Ian Brady, quando orridge ripete 'very friendly', fa davvero venire i brividi. Non fidatevi degli sconosciuti! Ahahahaaha
