(è uno dei pochi che li conosce...che vaggia dì)
I Vampire Rodents hanno dato luogo a una delle saghe musicali piu` avvincenti degli anni '90. I loro album sono tripudi di fantasia libera, a meta` strada fra visioni psichedeliche e collage d'avanguardia.
Anton Rathausen (pseudonimo di Daniel Vahnke) e Victor Wulf provengono da Toronto. Il primo era antropologo di professione e studente di musica d'avanguardia. Il secondo scriveva colonne sonore per il cinema. Rathausen-Vahnke si trasferi` in Arizona per unirsi a due amici antropologhi, Karl Geist e Jing Laoshu. Nacquero cosi` i Vampire Rodents: Rathausen-Vahnke alla chitarra, al canto e al campionamento; Wulf alle tastiere; Laoshu alle percussioni; Geist al basso.

cmq sono follemente geniali!
6 dischi in 6 anni..ora hanno avuto la sfiga del fallimento dell'etichetta e quindi anche avendo materiale per almeno due album si stanno arripigliando dalla botta emotiva e forse si mettono a cercare qualcuno che li pubblichi(io spero nella ipecac che ci starebbero da dio!)
sempre per colpa dell'etichetta non hanno avuto una distribuzione decente..

stando a scaruffi sempre:
I Vampire Rodents sono peraltro un'entita` sfuggente, che ha cambiato musica con il passare degli anni: War Music era ancora dominato dalla chitarra e dal canto secondo le convenzioni della musica rock, Premonition ampliava la strumentazione e strizzava l'occhio all'avanguardia, Lullaby Land aggiornava il sound all'era del techno e dell'heavymetal, Clockseed assimilava l'orchestra e le drum machine, Gravity's Rim recuperava la forma canzone. Ogni episodio ha complicato l'armonia, senza rinunciare a sabotarla.
Il progetto Dilate di Victor Wulf ha prodotto alcuni album di musica ambientale: Cyclos (Cleopatra, 1996) e Octagon (Cleopatra, 1997). Wulf lavora anche al progetto d'avanguardia Tracer.
Alchemia e` il progetto synth-pop di Daniel Vahnke con Athan Maroulis degli Spahn Ranch. Vahnke e` anche attivo come Obsidian e Taint.
Victor Wulf e Andrea Akastia sono docenti universitari, e pertanto impegnati soltanto marginalmente impegnati nei Vampire Rodents.

tra l'altro con un amico stiamo cercano di farli mettere sotto contratto (mica ce pagano....logicamente) perchè è un'ingiustizia che non abbiano contratto....

Daniel Vahnke: Unless it's a chemical, of course.
Victor Wulf: Well, I generally consider being influenced by anything to be
detrimental.
Victor Wulf: I like big band music, Can, Bernard Herrmann, Zorn, the usual.
Daniel Vahnke: Don't forget Carl Stalling. Bugs Bunny is a god. The only
groups I still listen to occasionally are Neubauten, old Gang of Four; The
Young Gods are great. I'm mainly influenced by modern chamber music:
Penderecki, Cage, Mimaroglu. Diamanda Galas is a goddess.
If Trent Reznor called up and wanted to sign VR to his label and then have
you tour with NIN, would you do it?
Daniel Vahnke: Of course. Reznor may catch a lot of crap in the press, but
he is one of the few sample-based composers (SBC) out there who accent on
the importance of the actual process, instead of playing the "we're just a
rock band, man" type of wank. I'd like to work with him someday if he ever
cheers up. Everything seems so loud now. The NIN audience might be a
problem, though. I fear there might be confrontations with the jumpy little
jock meenkeys.
I've noticed some similarities between your music and both Foetus and Mr.
Bungle. Do you see any stylistic connection?
Daniel Vahnke: Thirlwell is certainly an SBC pioneer in many respects. I've
heard some of the early Foetus stuff as well as the new album. Excellent
arranger. I'd like to see him write for a touring big band. Zorn and Patton
may not use SBC, but the mosaic composition is precisely the same. Zorn
especially proves the point that all music is an endless stream of
reconstructed and regurgitated noise that can only be perceived and consumed
in a state of controlled chaos.
